SAN LUIS, Ariz. (AP) - San Luis officials are asking for the public's patience as border inspections cause delays for motorists crossing into Mexico.

The U.S. government's efforts to crack down on drug cartel violence in Mexico has led to lengthy inspections for vehicles heading southbound as Customs and Border Protection officers look for weapons and large sums of crash.

Mayor Juan Carlos Escamilla tells the Yuma Sun that lines of Mexico-bound traffic are likely to get even longer during the agricultural produce season in the weeks ahead, given that many farmworkers commute between their homes in Mexico and Yuma-area fields.

Escamilla says city officials in the southwest Arizona city have met with Border Patrol officials to find ways to minimize the border crossing delays.

The Border Patrol says the inspections will continue indefinitely.
