Ping-pong politics over future of DACA (ALIPAC)
Ping-pong politics over future of DACA

A pro-immigration enforcement activist says it was frustrating to hear President Donald Trump tout a "comprehensive immigration plan" last week.
That term really means amnesty for illegal aliens, complains William Gheen of Americans for Legal Immigration, and it was a shocking statement to hear in the anti-illegal immigration movement.
"What I'd like to do is a comprehensive immigration plan," Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One last week while traveling to France. "But our country and political forces are not ready yet."
Reporting on the comment, The Washington Times called it a "stunning remark" considering that Trump campaigned on cracking down on illegal immigration.
Trump was answering a reporter's question about the controversial DACA program begun by the Obama administration, the newspaper explained.
OneNewsNow reported in recent days that Trump is being praised by the U.S. Border Patrol by backing its agents who are tasked with protecting and securing the country's porous U.S.-Mexico border.
Yet OneNewsNow has also reported that Trump is undecided about DACA, hinting at times that the administration's crackdown might stop with criminals and let the children of illegal aliens remain in the country.
Gheen, in fact, was quoted in a January story expressing concern that Trump, after taking the oath of office two weeks earlier, had yet to follow through on his tough campaign rhetoric. Instead, the new administration was suggesting it was working with Congress to find a "solution" to the DACA issue.
Gheen was also concerned at the time that Trump told ABC News he had a "big heart" about the issue of DACA and the so-called Dreamers it protects from deportation.
News headlines about Trump and DACA have bounced all over the place since January, likely telegraphing ongoing debates within the White House on how to move forward.
"Immigration groups: Trump's silence on DACA means it's here to stay," reads a Washington Examiner headline from June 25.
"The future of DACA suddenly looks every shaky," reads a more recent July 14 headline from Vox, the left-wing news website.
The position Trump is taking now, says Gheen, is "180 degrees different" from what then-candidate Trump stated on the campaign trail.
Gheen says he personally supports the legal strategy by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, who has pledged a lawsuit if Trump fails to revoke DACA by September.
The Vox story mentioned above suggests it could be Paxton's legal action that forces Attorney General Jeff Sessions to a courtroom to defend the legality of the program.
"We're encouraging Americans in every state to contact their governors and state attorney generals," says Gheen, "to ask that their state join to press a lawsuit immediately."
