One-third of 46 million uninsured could be illegal immigrants and citizen children

Illegal immigrants and their children, many of whom were born in the U.S. and are citizens, could make up a sizeable chunk of the often-cited 46 million people without health insurance in the U.S.

The Center for Immigration Studies estimates that as many as 15 million of the uninsured in the U.S. are undocumented immigrants and their children.

The 46 million figure has been quoted by President Barack Obama and others in the debate over health care reform. The figure comes from U.S. Census Bureau estimates that takes account illegal immigrants and other non-U.S. citizens living in the U.S.

The Census Bureau number lists 9.7 million non-citizens living in the U.S. as part of the overall uninsured numbers, including some illegal immigrants.

Census Bureau data also shows that close to 31 million of the 46 million insured have family incomes of less than $50,000 a year. There are 7 million people in the U.S. who make more than $75,000 annually and do not have health insurance.

Democrats make it safe for illegal immigrants to use Obamacare

If Congress passes Obamacare - about a 50/50 chance at this juncture - illegal immigrants will not have to worry about anyone checking the status of their citizenship to confirm their eligibility for this entitlement.

That's because House Democrats on the Ways and Means Committee defeated a reasonable amendment from Nevada's Dean Heller (R) that would have "enforced income, eligibility and immigration-verification screening on all ObamaCare patients," according to Michelle Malkin in her syndicated column appearing in the New York Post:


Immigration analyst James R. Edwards Jr. reported last week in National Review that "no health legislation on the table requires federal, state or local agencies -- or private institutions receiving federal funds -- to check the immigration status of health-program applicants, so some of the money distributed via Medicaid and tax credits inevitably would go to illegal aliens." Moreover, the Senate Finance Committee plan creates a preference for illegal aliens by exempting them from the mandate to buy insurance.

That's right. Law-abiding, uninsured Americans would be fined if they didn't submit to the ObamaCare prescription. Law-breaking border-crossers and deportation fugitives would be spared.

For years, advocates of uncontrolled immigration have argued that illegals aren't getting free health care, and that even if they were, they'd not be draining government budgets. The fiscal crisis in California gives lie to those talking points. In March, the Associated Press reported that Sacramento and Contra Costa counties were slashing staff and closing clinics due to the prohibitive costs of providing non-emergency health services for illegals.

"The general situation there is being faced by nearly every health department across the country, and if not right now, shortly," Robert M. Pestronk of the National Association of County and City Health Officials, told the AP.


Talking out of both sides of your mouth can be difficult. But when it comes to the stealing of government services by illegal immigrants, Democrats have little problem in assuring us that no illegals will benefit from Obamacare while at the same time saying they're not a drain on the system anyway.

Yeah. Just like saying illegal immigrants don't vote but even if they do, so what?

We know the illegal numbers are closer to 30 to 40 million.
