    Cannon ousted in primary

Note, Cannon has been ousted, so I'm changing the title of this post to "Cannon ousted in primary":

    580 of 621 precincts reporting: 93%

    Cannon, Chris 40%

    Chaffetz, Jason 60%

    Cannon apparently ousted in primary

Rep. Chris Cannon (R-Utah) early Wednesday morning appeared on his way to becoming the third House incumbent to lose a primary this year, falling to former gubernatorial aide Jason Chaffetz.

Chaffetz, a former chief of staff to Gov. Jon Huntsman (R), led Cannon 60 percent to 40 percent with 78 percent of precincts reporting. The race has not yet officially been called for Chaffetz, but he sounded a victorious tone as the last precincts trickled in, according to local reports.

Chaffetz beat Cannon at the state party convention last month, taking 59 percent of the vote and coming up just shy of the 60 percent needed to win the race outright. In the head-to-head primary, he used a meagerly funded grassroots effort, but this was apparently enough to beat the incumbent, who had weathered tough primary challenges each of the past two cycles.

In February, Maryland Reps. Al Wynn (D) and Wayne Gilchrest (R) both fell to primary challengers.

Cannon’s district is strongly Republican, voting 77 percent for President Bush in 2004, meaning Chaffetz would be a huge favorite in the general election against Democrat Bennion Spencer.

Much of the opposition to Cannon has been based on his support for comprehensive immigration reform.

Utah congressman ousted in Republican primary

VERGAKIS Associated Press Writer SALT LAKE CITY (AP)

Representative Chris Cannon of Utah has lost his seat in Congress.

Jason Chaffetz defeated the six-term congressman in a Republican primary Tuesday.

Cannon is one of the most conservative members of Congress, but Chaffetz told voters he's even more conservative.

He favors deporting illegal immigrants, abolishing the Education Department and cutting a slew of federal programs unless they can prove they're working.

Chaffetz will face Democratic candidate Spencer Bennion in the fall in Utah's heavily Republican 3rd District.

Chaffetz was a kicker on the Brigham Young University football team in the 1980s and served as chief of staff for Governor Jon Huntsman. The district is dominated by Utah County, south of Salt Lake City.

[b]Tom Tancredo WARNED Cannon MANY times..!

This SHOULD'VE stopped at the convention, had it not been for that lying hypocrite Cannon, telling the Chaffetz Delegates: [color=blue]“..they'd already won, to go ahead and leave..â€
No need for ‘mass roundups’, simply ENFORCE EXISTING law*& MANDATE the worker ID, ..but SEVEN amnesties? Hmm, WHO cried wolf?!

Rep. Chris Cannon loses in Utah! (Jason Chaffetz)

Illegal immigration-supporting hack and Republican Congressman from Utah Chris Cannon will lose the primary election to Jason Chaffetz. With over 80% of the votes counted at post time, Chaffetz leads 60% to about 40%, so it's safe to call.

There are about forty posts at this site mentioning Cannon; use the search function to see them all. His higlight reel includes one of his aides soliciting campaign contributions from illegal aliens as he sat next to him, his links to David Safavian and Grover Norquist, the money he got from the cheap labor lobby, and more. See also this, this, and this. And, in 2002 - when accepting an award from the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF) - he said this:

"We love immigrants in Utah. And we don't make the distinction very often between legal and illegal. In fact, I think Utah was the first state in the country to legislate the ability to get a driver's license based on the matricula consular [the Mexican government's illegal-alien ID card] and of that I'm proud."
As for Chafetz, he says among other things:

I will not support or vote for amnesty in any way, shape or form. If you are here illegally, there is no pathway to citizenship except to apply from your country of origin.
Whether there are loopholes in that statement or not remains to be seen, but just about anyone would be better than Cannon.

In the past when Cannon has been challenged on his immigration stance and won, various sources have pointed to that as an example of public support for "comprehensive immigration reform" and/or an indication that those who support our laws have trouble at the ballot boxes. What those same sources will say in this case remains to be seen. Perhaps they won't say anything at all, or perhaps they'll try to pretend it was due to something other than immigration.
