HIDALGO COUNTY, TEXAS -- U.S. Border Patrol agents in McAllen seized nearly 5,000 pounds of marijuana in separate seizures Thursday.

In all, the seized drugs totaled more than $3.6 million.

Agents made the busts in the Peñitas area, the area of Abram, Hidalgo and Mission.

In one case, agents found an overturned vehicle in a canal.

The driver of the minivan had driven it right into the Rio Grande.

"There were five vehicles involved in the five seizures, and one of the agents actually came across several bundles along the river bank," said Lee Cabrera with the U.S. Border Patrol.
