Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) is headed to South Carolina — a move that suggests he might be looking at a run for president, CNN’s Peter Hamby reports.
Hamby reports King will attend the closed-door “Charleston Meeting,” a gathering of influential national conservatives and business leaders hosted by conservative activist Mallory Factor.
King will also hold an invitation-only meeting with South Carolina GOP activists in Charleston County.
King’s office has not yet commented on whether he is looking at a run for president, but such trips are generally only embarked on by politicians angling for a national profile and/or a potential presidential run.
King, of course, comes from the state that is first in line when it comes to the presidential nominating process.
A presidential run would undoubtedly give King a platform to push his hard-line positions on immigration reform. Former congressman Tom Tancredo (R-Colo.), King’s ally in the House, ran for president on just such a platform in 2008, after Congress voted down another effort at immigration reform.
The other King in the House — Rep. Peter King (R-N.Y.) — has said publicly said that he is looking at running for president.
Steve King earlier this year opted not to run for the open Senate seat in Iowa.
