EL PASO, Texas -- Authorities arrested an illegal Mexican immigrant on Friday charges he strangled an elderly West Texas woman.
Officials say 29-year-old Juan L. Leal had already been deported in 2005 as an “aggravated felon'' after serving prison time for an El Paso rape.
Leal now faces a murder charge in the killing of 78-year-old Asuncion Flores Montes at her home in Socorro on Aug. 12.
El Paso County Sheriff's spokesman Rick Glancey said an autopsy shows she was strangled and suffered a head injury. Few other details about the case were released.
Glancey said Leal also faces an outstanding warrant for violating a protective order and making a terroristic threat in July 2005.
Leal remains in El Paso County jail on $500,000 bail.
