U.S. polls divided on illegal immigrants
WASHINGTON, March 20 (UPI) -- Various polls show the majority of U.S. citizens want better security along the Mexican border, but there is little agreement over illegal immigrants working.

An immigration reform bill that passed the House of Representatives in December would massively expand U.S. border enforcement, compel employers to verify workers' citizenship and make it a federal crime to provide assistance to undocumented aliens.

However, there is no consensus on what should become of the estimated 11 to 12 million undocumented foreigners already living in the country, Voice of America reported.

It cited a recent public opinion survey showing 60 percent of Americans favor constructing a wall spanning the entire 1,800-mile U.S.-Mexico border, while 49 percent want to rescind automatic U.S. citizenship for the children of illegal immigrants who are born in the United States.

However, another survey shows 53 percent of U.S. citizens believe immigrants work at jobs that native-born citizens don't want to do.
