    Student arrest fuels immigration debate

    Student arrest fuels immigration debate
Mexican teen was in N.M. illegally, but should school grounds be off-limits?

Angry parents gather outside Roswell High School on Dec. 8, a day after student Karina Acosta was sent back to Mexico.

ROSWELL, N.M. — Karina Acosta’s senior year at Roswell High came to an abrupt end after she was ticketed for blocking a fire lane outside a school and driving without a license.

The officer who stopped her — a Roswell policeman assigned to the school — asked her for proof of legal U.S. residency. Acosta, an illegal immigrant, had none. The officer telephoned immigration authorities, and Acosta, 18 and pregnant, was sent back to Mexico.

The episode has caused a furor in town, with teachers and others complaining that Acosta’s treatment violated the spirit, if not the letter, of a U.S. Supreme Court ruling that has all but made the nation’s public schools safe havens for illegal immigrants.

She was outside and it's illegal to drive without a license, so what's the problem here? She is also 18 and no longer a child.

The officer did the right thing.

This happened last year and I believe the baby may have been born once she got to Mexico. Can anyone confirm?

So glad that these people are facing deportation when caught. This story makes me extremely happy. American citizens should be in the picture looking angry. Angry at our government for not protecting us! The nerve of these criminals.

They committed a crime by coming into this country illegally. They stay here, to to school, use our hospitals, get benefits and we subsidize them. When we complain about using taxpayer money to support them and attempt to send them back where they belong, they rise up and stand in defiance of us and our laws - the arrogance to stand against U.S. laws and U.S. citizens is beyond astounding. We must not back down - if you're illegal, get out of our country. The End.

The girl (with her illegal baby) is probably already back with her mother in Roswell.
