Charges Dropped in Case of Immigrants Living in Shed

GEORGETOWN, Del. (AP)- Authorities in Sussex County have dropped charges against two men accused of endangering the welfare of a 14-year-old girl, because the girl is actually 18 and the legal wife of one of the men.

Twenty-five-year-old Carlos Ortiz-Morales was arrested this spring after he was found living with the woman in a tin shed behind a home in Georgetown. Both are immigrants from Guatemala.

The woman told police she was 14 and had been having sex with Ortiz-Morales, resulting in rape charges against him. The property owner, 33-year-old Carlos Ortiz-Morales was charged with endangering her welfare.

But charges against both men were dropped recently when a birth certificate from the Guatemalan Embassy proved the woman was an adult.
