Pulling US aid to Honduras would fuel, not fight, illegal immigration

President Trump is right to want to stop an illegal immigrant caravan from approaching the U.S. border. But Trump would make a big mistake by following through on his threat on Tuesday and cutting U.S. aid programs in Honduras.

That's because the programs are specifically focused on reducing criminality while providing education and employment opportunities that allow Hondurans to escape from violence but remain in their own country. Gangs in Honduras, including MS-13, possess an almost psychotic penchant for brutality. And so, even as Trump rightly cannot accept illegal immigration, Honduran desperation is rational.

In turn, we should pay heed to the data on U.S. aid programs in Honduras. A 2014 study by Vanderbilt University, for example, found that thanks to U.S. programs, "51 percent fewer residents reported being aware of extortion and blackmail, 51 percent fewer residents reported being aware of murders, 35 percent fewer residents reported avoiding dangerous areas because of fear of crime." Similar programs continue to operate today. Moreover, Vanderbilt also found that U.S. AID's success has naturally conservative undertones: explicitly identifying the need for greater fostering of families, faith institutions, and schools in leading young people away from violence.

These, put simply, are programs that the American people have joined moral and political reason to support. A better way of preventing the kind of caravans we see this week would be to boost these aid programs and clean up the Honduran government. That would cultivate an environment of improved governance that could finally get to grips with Honduras' deep social ills. As for the caravan, why can't the U.S. Customs and Border Patrol simply obstruct its passage onto U.S. soil instead of threatening programs that work well?

I disagree with this writer on the aid. I agree with him on not letting them in. The goal of the aid sanctions is to stop it in the country before it gets to our borders and a show down with the US. It's their choice, either stop this nonsense or suffer the aid and trade consequences. It's very simple.

Shut down ALL incoming traffic at the Mexican border to ONE lane!

No papers, no entry!

Fixing this is not simple and not easy.
If you cut their aid and trade they will be hurting even more if they stay home so many more of them will try the trip to the U.S.

Maybe the hospital couldn't pay the nurse because it treats poor people who can't pay their bills. Maybe the school couldn't pay the teacher because the poor people can't pay their taxes.

Sure we have some and I imagine there are a few in Honduras who have graduated from college and are waiting for a position. But I don't think they're in a criminal migrant march to the United States, I don't think a nurse or a teacher would drag themselves or their kids on a foot march to the United States from Honduras to claim an asylum they know they're not eligible for. None of that is credible to me. Honduras has socialized medicine and government paid education all the way through college. It's not the poor little country so many make it out to be.

Sounds to me like you feel sorry for these people, JD2, and that's why you want to keep sending US tax dollars and US economic dollars down there, feeding the beast invading our country.

A strange position in my view.

I honestly don't know what the truth is, but if I were to venture a guess, I'd say the reasons they're coming varies from person to person. Some may be as you describe, but I'm sure some aren't.

Whatever the case, it's not appropriate to make up lies and try to pass them off as truth. Doing so hurts your credibility, our credibility, and ALIPAC's credibility (IMO).

I had no idea how thin-skinned you, stoptheinvaders and JD2 are when it comes to illegal aliens. I'm sure I'm right about the nurse and teacher and hope Veritas or someone explores this and finds out just who these people really are, because they are not who they say they are, and they are not invading the US for the reasons they give. They are corrupt nations. Any monies or aid given by us should be properly overseen by us to actually do good for the people and nations. We must stop throwing good money after bad, giving money that only goes in the pockets of the leaders. We are making little progress.

Trump pulled the aid to Honduras, as well as Guatemala and El Salvador. Didn't "threatened", pulled it, stopped it, blocked it. No money flowing in this aid program, and that was yesterday. Today, it's no aid at all unless they stop it. Tomorrow or next week, it could be no trade. Hopefully they'll stop it with the aid sanctions. That would of course be best for all involved, although we'd make money on it, but we want friendly relations with our neighbors and region, but that is not possible when their citizens are invading our country illegally. So we'll see how it goes. The ball is in their court but we own the stadium.
