Congressmen attend health care debate

September 1, 2009 (CHICAGO) (WLS) -- Two congressmen were among hundreds who filled a downtown auditorium on Tuesday night for a health care town hall.

Pat Cassidy of WLS Radio, which sponsored the session, asked a question.

"A change in health care. Not happy with the status quo? Can I hear your applause," said Cassidy.

The crowd cheered for changing the system. But Chicago Democratic congressman Danny Davis drew a mixed reaction for endorsing a single payer, or government-run system. He and suburban Republican congressman Peter Roskam agreed that illegal immigrants should receive emergency medical treatment. Roskam opposed including illegals in a taxpayer-subsidized healthcare system.
