Citizens against Illegal Aliens, a Southwest Florida-based group, plans to hold its “I’m Proud to be an American” rally at 11 a.m. Sunday at Centennial Park with speakers and music.

“Our goal for this event is to educate the public,” said Russ Landry, president of the organization. “We want to educate the public on all the issues regarding illegal immigration and attempt to empower our government on existing laws.”

The speakers include:
¸ Tom Macklin, former mayor of Avon Park in central Florida, who is in the state’s lieutenant governor race as a third-party candidate.
Macklin tried to pass a city ordinance in Avon Park that would have punished anyone who knowingly hired or leased property to an undocumented immigrant.
¸ Andy Anderson, a city councilman in Palm Bay, Fla., where another anti-illegal immigrant ordinance failed.
¸ Mike Jarbeck, the head of the Minutemen Civil Defense Corp’s Florida chapter. The Minutemen patrol the American border with Mexico to stop illegal immigrants from crossing.
¸ Joyce Tarnow, co-founder of Floridians for a Sustainable Population, which wants to stem the flow of population increases.
¸ Dave Caulkett of Floridians for Immigration Enforcement.
¸ Gerard David Jr., a third-party candidate for Lee County Commission.

At 3 p.m., after the speeches, the Southwest Florida Brigade of the American Freedom Riders will host a “Secure Our Borders” motorcycle ride through Lee County. Those in cars also are welcome.

The American Freedom Riders is a Phoenix-based group that supports better border protection.

Landry said there will be brochures and information on immigration on tables throughout the park Sunday.

People should bring lawn chairs and American flags, he said.
