SDSU Asks Professor To Stop Minutemen E-Mails

SAN DIEGO -- San Diego State University has asked a retired professor to stop using his university e-mail to organize rallies against illegal immigration and to correspond with the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps.

Professor Stuart Hurlbert, who recently retired after 36 years of teaching biology, said he has no plans to stop and that he's being persecuted for his beliefs. He said university officials have never stopped colleagues from soliciting him through university e-mail for any number of non-work-related causes, including the Gay Pride Festival and Girl Scout cookie sales.

Hurlbert maintains a campus office and e-mail privileges. He is working on a book about the Salton Sea.

University officials said the demand has nothing to do with Hurlbert's politics. They said policies forbid use of public resources for non-work-related activities, whether political or not.

A complaint prompted the attempt to shut down political activism through university computers.

I'm glad the professor went to the press. If they back the use of their computers for other political and social causes it should be allowed.
