    NEW YORK

Trying to turn street protests into political power, immigrants rights groups say they are gearing up for a campaign to register 1 million new voters this spring and summer.

The groups, working together as the We Are America Alliance, plan a string of events around the country starting next week, including voter registration drives, citizenship workshops and street rallies.

Organizers also plan to lobby local, state and federal elected officials on immigration issues through phone calls, petitions and faxes. New York's action day will be May 20. A Wednesday news conference was scheduled to outline the local program.

"We need to take the energy and the passion of immigrants and their allies and hold elected officials accountable," said Chris Wood, campaign manager for New American Opportunity Campaign, a leading organizer.

Organizers also are aiming to get hundreds of thousands of people to rally for immigrants rights around the country over Labor Day weekend.

The alliance's members, such as the New York Immigration Coalition and the National Capital Immigration Coalition, have been working for years to reform immigration laws, said Germonique Jones of the Center for Community Change. Most did not support the May 1 work and school boycott and prefer more moderate measures to push for change.

The alliance is being announced this week in cities including Chicago, Los Angeles, Boston and Washington, D.C.

The immigrant rights movement has grown enormously in recent months, sparked in part by a proposed federal measure that would make it a felony to be in the country illegally.

How do we guarantee that these people getting signed up are citizens?

This is a huge problem people....all these illegals are going to register....we need to storm the voting centers when they vote and demand that they prove they are citizens

They will disrespect the laws about being a US citizen to register to vote, just like they ignore the rest of our laws.

    Treason incarnate

This is beyond "simple" massive voter fraud, this constitutes an overthrow of the lawful and legally constituted representative government of the United States through an illegal, absolute, and utter corruption of our political system by which our very nation exists and survives. This is why individuals of both parties from the President on down who are actively, knowingly, and deliberately enabling this damnable filth are considered traitors by many Americans. If this ia allowed to go on unpunished and unabated, it will be the death of America and the end of our Constitutional freedoms fro which millions of Americans over hundreds of years have gallantly served, fought, and died to preserve. There is only one reward for treason and one remedy for traitors and it isn't re-election.

If illegals vote in mass then we will be unable to have a valid election.

And this is the horrible truth. Think about it. When I registered to vote I at no time had to prove my citizenship... Did you? They are voting period, end of story.

We can talk about the power of our vote but in the end come November they will be voting right along side us. I personally feel it will be too late in November and definitely by 2008. I do not know what we need to do but the voting process is being corrupted just like everything else.

It's easier to register to vote then it is to get a driver's license.

Sorry if this is so wordy- (I'm obsessed)

On Lou Dobbs today (May22 2006) I watched Fabien Nunez in file footage also proclaim desire to register 1 million new voters. These Pro-Illegal groups in a number of states have been saying they are going to register 1 million new voters.. I question the notion that there are that many eligible voters-
    I thought to myself :
'Hmm how could they register illegals to vote without fear of prosecution?' So, I perused the CA laws for voting.

I read every damn CA law and found no mention of any "programs and activities conducted for the purpose of ensuring the accuracy and currency of official lists of eligible voters" which is required under the Federal National Voter Registration Act

    Further:
Pub. L. 104-132, title IX, Sec. 902, Apr. 24, 1996, 110 Stat. 1317, provided that: "Notwithstanding any other provision of law, a Federal, State, or local government agency may not use a voter registration card (or other related document) that evidences registration for an election for Federal office, as evidence to prove United States citizenship."

    Yet under California Election Code:
2112. Notwithstanding any other provision of law to the contrary,
the fact that a person certifies to his or her United States
citizenship by signing his or her affidavit of registration shall be
deemed evidence of citizenship for voting purposes only.

2111. A person may prove he or she is a citizen by his or her
certification under penalty of perjury on the affidavit of
    registration.

2102.(c) Notwithstanding any other provision of law to the contrary,
the affidavit of registration required under this chapter may not be
taken under sworn oath, but the content of the affidavit shall be
certified as to its truthfulness and correctness, under penalty of
perjury, by the signature of the affiant.

    What's all this mean?
In other words , if I were an illegal alien, and I wanted to vote for a sympathetic candidate, the only risk to me would be getting caught lying on my registration form. No one verifies it, and for purposes of voting in California, it is a completely valid voter registration!
See, I can certify my own afidavit by signing the form!. In essence, Voter fraud is legal in California - even if it's illegal on the Federal level.
That is until the Feds sue California.

This may be the very loophole in California Election Code that Nunez and others may be using. It may be what Florida is doing.

    However:
There have been federal cases brought by the US Government against Counties and States in the USA because they didn't comply with the law that states that "Any State program or activity to protect the integrity of the electoral process by ensuring the maintenance of an accurate and current voter registration roll for elections for Federal office -(1) shall be uniform, nondiscriminatory, and in compliance with the Voting Rights Act of 1965 (42 U.S.C. 1973 et seq.)

I'm not a lawyer, but I have to tell you again- I can't find one California law that establishes a program whereby the accuracy of voter eligibility based on citizenship is ensured!

From what I can gather the only thing uniform about CA's maintenance of a voter registration roll is the lack of a program to ensure accuracy. Which btw is against Federal Law too.
