Immigrants say governor on shaky ground
An immigrant organization in Santa Fe says the governor’s new driver's license verification policy could be illegal.
Gov. Susana Martinez today announced that the state Motor Vehicle Division would run residency verification checks on at least 10,000 people in the state's foreign national database. She wants to identify illegal immigrants who do not reside in New Mexico and are therefore ineligible for a state driver’s license.
But Elsa Lopez, of the immigrant group Somos Un Pueblo Unido, said Martinez's policy is flawed.
For one thing, she said, New Mexico's database of “foreignâ€NO AMNESTY
Don't reward the criminal actions of millions of illegal aliens by giving them citizenship.
