Government goes after bank accounts in harboring case

11 hours ago • By Jeff Reinitz

WAUCOMA | The government is going after the bank accounts of a grain bin builder accused of hiring illegal immigrants, including one who is awaiting trial for kidnapping a girl.

Court records allege Ramon Marcos Perez, 23, also known as Rodrigo Sandoval Estrada, a Guatemalan citizen who was in the United States illegally, had made $11 an hour working at Manzano Grain Bin Construction. Perez was arrested in August for allegedly bringing a 13-year-old girl to a Waucoma apartment and abusing her. His trial is tentatively scheduled for April.

On Tuesday, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Iowa filed a forfeiture action to claim $13,754 in bank accounts belonging to Manzano Grain Bin Construction and operator Juan Carlos Manzano-Huerta.

Manzano was charged in February with harboring an illegal alien for hiring Elvin Heraldo Alberto-Monge, a Honduran citizen who had returned to the United States after being deported in 2010.

Alberto worked for a few months in the winter of 2012 to 2013 and left for a job at a Minnesota dairy in 2013 after grain bin work slowed down, court records state. He pleaded guilty to illegal reentry in and was sentenced to 133 days in jail with credit for time served in February.

Perez worked for Manzano’s operation about two years and was a foreman, records state.

Immigration authorities also allege Dennis Adelio Ortiz-Florez, a citizen of Honduras who was in the country illegally, worked for the grain bin company for a month and a half.

Investigators searched the banking records of Manzano and his company and found checks made out to known undocumented workers, court records state.
