Dream Act vote reveals differences between Hatch, Bennett

SALT LAKE CITY -- Senate Republicans blocked a bill this weekend that would eventually allow legal status for many children of illegal immigrants.

The so-called Dream Act appears dead for now. The showdown vote revealed an interesting difference between Utah's two Republican senators.

In one of his last votes, outgoing Sen. Bob Bennett voted in favor of the Dream Act. Sen. Orrin Hatch, who expects a tough fight for reelection two years from now, sat this one out and didn't vote, even though he was one of the Dream Act's original sponsors.

Supporters of the Dream Act had a majority -- 55 votes -- but they needed 60 to stop Republicans from filibustering. The bill would have allowed children of illegal immigrants to gain legal status if they're in college or serve in the military.

Daniel Argueta of the Salt Lake Dream Team support group said many undocumented students shed tears after the Senate showdown.

"They still have to remain in the shadows, unfortunately," he said. "They still live with fear of getting deported every day and being separated from their families."

State Rep. Stephen Sandstrom, R-Orem, applauded the outcome. "We cannot reward illegal behavior," he said.

Sandstrom remains committed to his bill requiring a law-enforcement crackdown on illegal immigrants.

"Even though it may be kids that were brought here by their parents, to me there has to be consequence for their actions," he said.

Argueta disagrees. "They're students that have lived here since they were four or five years old," he said. "If they're deported back to their country, they're being deported to someplace they don't know."

Argueta noted the contrast in Utah's two senators -- Hatch and Bennett.

"It's less about politics now with Bennett and it's more about doing what is right," he said. "With Sen. Hatch, unfortunately it hasn't worked out that way. He is still battling to stay in power."

Sandstrom said the priority is to secure the borders. If the children are given a legal break before then, it will just attract more illegals.

"I think Hatch originally supported the Dream Act and I think he's heard it from his constituents that they do not support it here in Utah, the majority of the people," he said.

Argueta says the Dream Act does appear dead for now, but the dream itself is not dead and the fight will go on.

The 'living in the shadows' is so passe. No one believes that esp with the current administration.

Bennet did not do what was "right", he stuck it to we the people again... the exact reason he is no longer employed! And Hatch did himself NO favors by sitting out the vote, we will remember with OUR votes at election time.

The other side obviously thinks we are going to go back to being complacent, we all know our job continues! Come 2011 we are going to be riding herd on the "new" Congress, we want our laws enforced and borders secured. We want to see ICE and DHS do the job they are supposed to be doing, NOT what Obozo allows them to do. We are sick and tired of not being listened to, if the new guys fail to do this we will replace them too.

Oh golly gee..My cousin who has lived in one state her whole life is now moving to other side of the country....Why ..her husband is in the military and her and the 3 kids are moving to a place they never been..Oh my what is she gonna do...Leaving where she was born and raised to be uprooted to go to a place she has never been...Oh And the Kids are going with her they are going as a FAMILY..Maybe she should think about leaving them behind because they have never lived anywhere else....Oh the gull of the military to do this to them,....

Hatch and Bennett are the two biggest weasels on earth. Bennett is a sell out RINO who is now gone, thank heavens. Hatch is done in 2012, that is for sure. We are all sick of both of them. In January we are going to pass the law that actually enforces the law and a lot of illegal Mexicans in Utah are going home, in any case they will be rolling up the welcome mat.

While I think they know they're SUPPOSED to represent Americans and the will of the people, I think these politicians are under very heavy pressure from churches, corporate and special interest groups to pass an amnesty so that the exploitation of illegals can continue. Churches want the increasing number of illegal alien converts who find refuge behind religious institutions.
Those who favor illegal immigration seem to trade ethics for dollars and benefits.

Good point Excalgal. Big deal, they might have to move. They are going to a country they love, a flag they love to wave here, a language they love to speak, and their own culture. They have many relatives over there they can live with. Hell, they live 60 to a house here, so i am sure they can do it in mexico.
