Border Angels March Through Yuma for Immigration Reform

    (The KSWT News
    February 3, 2009)

Activists March Through Yuma for Immigration Reform

Supporters of immigration reform have set out on a cross-country march and they included a stop in the desert southwest. The nationwide effort is spear-headed by a non-profit called Border Angels. This is the group's fourth migrant march, but this one comes well after congress abandoned talks for immigration reform. Now activists are attempting to breath new life into that debate.

Migrant March IV made a stop in Yuma on Tuesday morning. This time organizers are taking their case to President Barack Obama to stop workplace raids and border fencing.

"We don't want to have any more deaths," says Enrique Morones with Border Angles. "That's why we're going to be going across the country, planting crosses and reminding people that there's been more than 10,000 people who have died crossing through Arizona, crossing through California, New Mexico and Texas, coming into this country."

Community leaders also made a plea for immigrant families who have built a life here in the desert southwest. Local non-profit Campesinos Sin Fronteras has joined the human rights rally. They say immigration policies are tearing families apart.

"Some families are being divided. There's people who've been here 20, 30 years and all of a sudden parents are deported to Mexico, and the children are left behind. They are youth citizens that are here now and they don't have their family anymore," says Netta Garcia with Campesinos Sin Fronteras.

Marchers will continue their journey on to Washington D.C. to meet with National Security Secretary Janet Napolitano and former presidential candidate Senator John McCain. They say the answer to the immigration issue will require bi-partisan work.

The group's next stop is Coachella, California, and marchers expect to reach Washtington D.C. by next Tuesday.

Neither do Americans, who are dying in droves at the hands of illegal foreign invaders. That is why we insist that you leave immediately!

Some American families have been here for as many as 7 generations, yet you have "no problemo" driving us out of our lives.

What part of illegal don't these criminals understand?

Nine activists participated when the 4th Immigrant March stopped in Yuma to gather signatures to help support immigration reform, stop raids and the construction of the border fence.

Fewer than a dozen people participated in the march on Tuesday on the lawn of the Heritage Branch library. The purpose of the march was to obtain signatures to remind government officials, senators, and congressional members the need for immigration reform.

“We started our march at Friendship Park in San Diego as a symbolic act because the government wants to close it down and we don’t want that,â€
