A Grand Island man who was sentenced while in his teens to firing a pistol into a house and striking a young girl is among Central Nebraskans up for parole.

Juan Nava, 27, was 16 years old when he was sentenced to a total of 14 years to 20 years, 10 months in prison for second-degree assault and the unlawful discharge of a gun for the Nov. 28, 1997, incident.

According to authorities, five shots were fired into a house in what police called a gang-related incident. A girl, then 12 years old, was hit in the leg and had to be hospitalized.

At the sentencing, Hall County Judge James Livingston said he felt Nava didn’t intend to shoot the girl, but by indiscriminately shooting at a house, the chance of hitting occupants was taken.
