By Robert Price Senator Chuck Hagel attends an immigration forum in Lexington Monday. The Nebraska Republican listened to the community's thoughts on the issue before heading to Washington to vote on an immigration reform bill.

Hagel says he will vote in favor of proceeding to debate the bi–partisan proposal.

Hagel is in Washington now, but earlier Monday he was in Lexington, hoping to use the local discussion as a springboard for the national debate.

Community leaders representing everyone from schools to law enforcement discussed recent research on how immigration has affected the city and what they would like to see the government do in response.

The impact of immigration in Nebraska—both legal and illegal—is a hot topic and Monday it drew many to the Lexington Public Library.
