Woman thrown in jail, car impounded in Mexico for expired American vehicle registration

    By Gina Benitez
    EL PASO, Texas —
A woman crossing into Juarez for a quick trip to bring back her husband's impounded car had her own car seized, but according to her, that was just the beginning of her two-day ordeal.

The woman told KFOX14 about two weeks ago, at around 9 a.m. she drove over the Stanton Bridge into Juarez, but didn't make it far.
The woman, who wants to remain anonymous, said she was crossing to deal with her husband's car issues, when she ran into car issues of her own -- her registration was expired.

As soon as a Mexican customs agent realized it, everything went south.

They allegedly told her it was illegal to have an expired plate and she was being charged with $20,000 worth of contraband -- what her car was worth.

Around this time last year, the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles put out a warning to drivers after they'd received reports of similar incidents -- the first were reported in El Paso.

But this woman said it didn't stop with the seizure of her car.

She said she was thrown in jail for almost two days and threatened with being taken to a maximum security prison in Nayarit.

"I could not sleep because I was thinking they were going grab me and throw me in a helicopter and I was never going tosee my family again. I have three boys that are my life," said the alleged victim.

The woman said she was was bailed out a day and a half later but said she was told by customs officials she was never getting her car back.

In these cases, the DMV will write letters for victims who report these incidents and provide them with the proper documentation, whether it be proof of ownership of a vehicle or an up-to-date registration.

In some cases, Mexican officials have turned over the impounded vehicles back to their rightful owners.
