Bush, Fox discuss US-Mexico border
MILWAUKEE, United States (AFP) - US President George W. Bush and Mexican President Vicente Fox discussed how to improve security and lower the level of violence along the US-Mexico border, the White House said.

"Primarily, they talked about the increased border violence, and the two leaders talked about the importance of working together to improve our border security and stop the violence," said Bush spokesman Scott McClellan.

McClellan, speaking to reporters as the US president traveled here to make a speech on energy policy, said Bush had designated US Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff as his point man for contacts with Mexico on border issues.

Bush, who has pushed an ambitious guest worker program, updated Fox on the initiative's status in the US Congress and assured the Mexican president he would keep pushing for it, said McClellan.

"Then they also talked about the security and prosperity partnership that was developed by Canada, Mexico and the United States, and talked about the possibility of meeting soon on that initiative," the spokesman said.
