NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Police confiscated maps of the federal courthouse from members of a street gang.

Police said it was a sign that members of MS-13 might consider an ambush to spring fellow gang members from custody.

"MS-13 swept into Nashville like a pack of jackals and they left a group of bloody victims in their wake," said Jim Cavanaugh, special agent with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives, in an interview last year.

Last year, a grand jury indicted 13 MS-13 members accused of killing three people and trying to kill seven others.

Some have been convicted and others remain in the Davidson County jail awaiting trial.

Law enforcement is concerned that fellow gang members could plan an ambush and escape.

NewsChannel 5 learned maps were confiscated from suspects that security and arrival time for inmates at the federal courthouse.

Davidson County Sheriff Daron Hall said the original maps are now in evidence. He said although the maps were crudely sketched, they were detailed.

He said no one has confessed to planning an ambush, but believes such maps target the trip from jail to courthouse.

Travel time is the most vulnerable part of security for inmates. Court hearings are scheduled for later this spring.

Hall will increase security during transport of gang inmates.

Sheriff's deputies work with the U.S. Marshals. Later this week several sheriff's deputies will be deputized by the U.S. Marshals so they have more power to deal with dangerous gang members.

The predominantly Latino gang originated in Los Angeles. It is one of the nation's largest gangs with an estimated 10,000 members in more than 10 states.

My poor little town I'm now starting to see Sur-13 tags all over the place. Not that it is good news, but some of the subarbanites are starting to be effected and it isn't going over well. There are a lot of wealthy and influential people in this town and those people that kept their head in the sand are now getting it snapped out of it.

P.S. Is Nashville a sanctuary city like Houston?

Nashville was a sanctuary city, but not any more. The police are now arresting them and having them deported. No license? Your residential status will be checked. I believe I read somewhere that 19% of the deportees have been people with a felony charge..

One of these days I am going to have to drive around Nashville and get some pics for you. I think you all would be very very surprised. I can compete with any pictures you have seen on here. And I can find gang tags from at least 5 different gangs. They could be from kids wanting to be cool, but who knows. Sur-13 went all out with their tagging about a month ago and they are all over town. MS-13 was shaken up and I wonder if a turf war is coming about.

287g seems to be working here. I think that is part of the reason for the flight out of the county and the new surprises in the suburbs. A part of me feels bad for feeling this way, but the people in the burbs have really turned a blind eye. By doing nothing the reap what they sow.
