Immigration authorities have arrested 50 undocumented immigrants who ignored orders to leave the country and another 12 who were in violation of U.S. immigration laws, many of them with criminal histories, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials said today.

Among those arrested was a 38-year-old Honduran convicted of sex crimes and deported in 2000. Jose Mario Lara now faces criminal charges for returning illegally to the United States. Re-entry after deportation is a felony that carries up to a 25-year prison sentence.

The criminal histories of those being held range from aggravated assault with a deadly weapon to prostitution and probation violations. Of the more than 52,000 undocumented immigrants apprehended by ICE fugitive operations teams nationwide since 2003, about 22,669 had criminal convictions, immigration authorities said.

''Our officers are working tirelessly to ensure that our nation's laws are upheld,'' Michael Rozos, field office director for the ICE Office of Detention and Removal Operations in Florida, said in a statement. ``Those who break our immigration laws shouldn't be surprised if they are arrested, charged and deported.''

The weeklong sweep by ICE's Miami Fugitive Operations team ended Friday with the arrest of 62 fugitives and violators.

Unless of course they find their way into a store-front church and refuse to come out while sending their kid out to whine to the Mexican government and demand that the President and Congress give them amnesty.

Welcome back reptile09. They didn't mention that during that sweep that included Miami Dade Police Department assistance and that they actually got 290 illegals but the 62 were to be deported as they had criminal records. The others get the luxury of deportation hearings.

This invasion could be over tomorrow if Congress and the President really cared about America! And the law enforced and criminals treated like criminals.

Wow, a whopping 62 apprehended after a weeklong sweep. That must have really took a lot of effort, especially considering the fact that there are probably tens of thousands of illegal in the Miami area.

I'm still waiting to hear of sweeps in California.
Bet they're afraid with the millions of illegals we have.

MW from what I know about ICE and catching illegals, they only publish numbers on those facing definite deportation such as criminal and most Elvira types they nab. They never give numbers of the others as they are entitled to deportation hearings. I wish they would publish the numbers of those they catch that have the deportation hearings as well as how many of them actually get deported.
