PICKENS, S.C. -- A Michigan-based company that is building the new school in Pickens was cited last week for employing undocumented aliens on the construction project.

The workers were at the site of the new Pickens High School on Moorefield Memorial Highway.

Kent Companies, Inc., based in Grand Rapids, Mich., was notified of the violation on May 26.

The audit was completed on May 19, under the Illegal Aliens and Private Employment chapter of the South Carolina Illegal Immigration Act.

Auditors said that they determined that the four employees were hired after July 1, 2009.

James Knight, administrator for the Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulations, said that three of the employees admitted to investigators that they were in the country illegally in the United States and were using fraudulent documents.

Kent Companies, Inc. has until June 9 to put a system in place to verify new employee eligibility in order to avoid a penalty.

The company will also be listed on the DLLR Web site as having been cited.
