HUNTSVILLE, Texas (AP) -- A member of the Mexican Mafia is set to die tomorrow for a 1994 double slaying during a power struggle within the violent Texas prison gang.
48-year-old Robert Perez was convicted five years after the 1994 shooting deaths at a San Antonio public housing project. His victims -- 34-year-old Jose Travieso and 27-year-old James Rivas -- were supporters of a faction within the gang.

Evidence at Perez's capital murder trial tied him to another 15 or so slayings. Among those were the infamous gangland-style executions of five people in 1997 known in San Antonio as the West French Place killings.

Perez is former laborer and ninth-grade dropout whom the prosecutor called a natural leader.
