New law in Lake St. Louis calls for identifying and reporting illegals to feds

LAKE ST. LOUIS (KSDK) -- Without any dissent, the Lake St. Louis City Council approved a new ordinance Tuesday that will set up a system to identify and report illegal immigrants to the federal government.

The measure, ordinance number 2882, has been on the legislative calendar for 18 months, but was languishing because a similar bill, approved by city fathers in Valley Park, was being challenged in court. The Valley Park law was upheld in the courts and that opened the door for the measure in Lake St. Louis.

The bill was sponsored by Alderman Harry Slyman, who says he was confronted with the issue of illegal immgrants working on a project he was involved in. Slyman, who is known for once running a string of appliance stores, says there was no mechanism to report the issue.

In addition, Slyman feels that illegal immigrants take work away from taxpayers and they should be removed from their jobs.

The other view is taken by Professor John Ammann, who runs the legal clinic at St. Louis University School of Law. Ammann represented opponents of the Valley Park law, and lost the challenge.

He thinks laws like the one passed Tuesday night are directed at people who have "brown skin," and it's really about prejudice and not jobs. Slyman and other city officials deny that.

Ammann says the law is not directed at illegal Canadians or Irish, but mostly illegals from south of the U.S. border.

The measure calls for City Administrator Paul Markworth to act as the gatekeeper of the law. Markworth would have to be contacted by citizens who suspect illegals working on construction sites in the city. He would have to investigate and then contact immigration authorities to fully investigate.

Markworth says he does not expect to be very busy with his new duties.

Yes, the law will mostly affect illegal aliens "from south of the border", because 80% of illegal aliens are from south of the border!! Thats not our fault or choice, it is theirs.

The ethnocentric advocates like Gutierrze and LaRaza discriminate in their advocacy of illegal aliens, they only aid and abet Hispanic illegal aliens. Mr. Ammann, you should really talk to them about their discriminatory practices.

The only way he won't be busy is if he just ignores complaints.
