PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Six state lawmakers in Rhode Island are criticizing Gov. Lincoln Chafee (CHAY'-fee) for supporting in-state tuition for illegal immigrants.
The lawmakers say they'll hold a press conference and rally Wednesday afternoon at the Statehouse to denounce Chafee's support for the tuition policy. A state higher education commission approved the new policy last week.
In a joint statement sent to reporters on Monday, the six lawmakers said Chafee should not have pushed the commission to make the change and should have instead let the General Assembly make the decision.
The lawmakers are Republican Sens. Nicholas Kettle and Francis Maher; Republican Reps. Doreen Costa, Joseph Trillo and Michael Chippendale; and Democrat Peter Palumbo.
Chafee is an independent.
