The bodies of at least 22 Haitian migrants -- some of whom appeared to have been chewed up by sharks -- were found off the coast of Turks and Caicos Friday after an overloaded vessel capsized as it was being towed in by authorities from that country, the U.S. Coast Guard in Miami said.

''We have reports that some did have bites that appeared to be from sharks,'' said Petty Officer Barry Bena. ''We don't know how many.'' Coast Guard officers assisting in the search and rescue operation are still looking for more than 50 other missing migrants. Some 73 Haitians were rescued, including 10 clinging to the hull of the boat.

All of the survivors are have been brought ashore and are in the custody of Turks and Caicos authorities, Bena said.

The 25- to 30-foot Haitian boat capsized at 4:30 a.m. just a half-mile off the coast of Providenciales Island. Survivors said about 150 passengers were aboard.

The Coast Guard was called for assistance at 5 a.m. and sent an HH-60 helicopter stationed in Great Inagua, Bahamas to the scene. A C-130 aircraft from Clearwater also was dispatched, along with a Coast Guard cutter on patrol in the region. The search and rescue operation was still underway Friday afternoon.

Evidence of apparent shark bites could be seen on some of the recovered bodies, which were taken to South Dock, on Providenciales.

It is not yet known what part of Haiti the boat departed from, if the deaths were the result of drowning after the boat capsized or the ages and genders of the dead and the rescued.
