A man previously convicted of assault and sexual abuse faces up to 20 years in prison for re-entering the country illegally.

Ivan Fernandez-Roman was arrested near Amado by Border Patrol agents on November 20 after they found him in the desert.

According to a news release, Fernandez-Roman admitted to entering the United States illegally a few days earlier about two miles west of the Nogales port of entry.

After entering Fernandez-Roman’s information into their system, border agents discovered he had been convicted of aggravated assault in Maricopa County in August of 2006 and sentenced to three years in prison. The system also revealed Fernandez-Roman was convicted in 2002 of sexual abuse with a minor in Illinois. He was sentenced to two years behind bars for that crime.

Fernandez-Roman will be prosecuted for re-entry of an aggravated felon and faces a maximum of 20 years behind bars.
