South Carolina lawmakers endorsed a new bill to crack down more on illegal immigration, despite questions about whether parts of the bill violate federal laws.

The State newspaper reported a Senate judiciary subcommittee voted 3-1 Thursday to send the bill to the full judiciary committee where the legislature returns Tuesday.

The subcommittee has been considering for nearly a year a bill that is similar to Arizona's law that will allow local police to enforce federal immigration laws.

The bill would update a 2008 immigration law in South Carolina, which mostly affected the hiring practices of businesses.
