PHOENIX -- A poll released Tuesday says the approval rating of Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio has dropped, and the sheriff has an explanation.
The Behavior Research Center's poll says 39 percent of the 476 heads of household in Maricopa County who were surveyed this month believe Arpaio is doing an excellent or good job.
That figure stood at 54 percent when the center last did a similar survey on Arpaio in late July 2008.
The latest survey didn't seek explanations on why some people's view of the five-term sheriff had changed.
It found 20 percent believe Arpaio was doing a fair job, while 34 percent said he was doing a poor or very poor job. Seven percent were unsure.
The poll was conducted between Jan. 7 and Jan. 22 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.6 percentage points.
In November, Arpaio's name came up on a Rasmussen poll of likely voters for the next Arizona Governor. See how well he fared then.
Statement by Sheriff Joe Arpaio
"For 17 years I have enjoyed great support and unprecedented approval ratings from the people of Maricopa County. Todays poll suggests a sudden dip in that popularity. While it pains me, I understand it. For the last several weeks, this Office and this Sheriff have been under constant media attack. Dozens of negative stories were published/aired during the time this poll was taken. No one could possibly escape such criticism unscathed. Though some media will be giddy with glee to report todays poll, the fact remains, I have tremendous support from the citizens of this county."
