Bodies hanging from bridge in Mexico are warning to social media users

(CNN) -- It was a chilling message: two bodies with signs of torture found hanging from a pedestrian bridge in the border town of Nuevo Laredo, Mexico.

Two posters left near the bodies declared that the pair -- a young man and woman -- were killed for denouncing drug cartel activity on a social network.

Bloggers who specialize in sharing news about trafficking have been threatened in the past, but this could be the first time that users of such social networks have been targeted.

The effect of such threats could be chilling, as several areas in Mexico -- including Nuevo Laredo -- have media outlets that self-censor out of fear of retribution by the cartels. In light of this censorship, blogs and social networks such as Twitter have surged as alternatives to keep citizens informed of dangers in their community.

Now the users of those networks appear to be under threat.

Even police were not commenting on the two bodies. Information about the incident came from what a reporter witnessed himself.

Tuesday morning, commuters spotted the man hanging by his hands, and the woman hanging by her hands and feet, her body in a "U" shape.

The placards threatened those who report violent incidents through social media networks. It lists two blogs by name, Al Rojo Vivo, and Blog del Narco.

"This happens for... denouncing," one of the signs said.

They were signed "Z," a possible reference for the Zetas cartel, which operates in the area.

Killings apparently target bloggers

The Laredo Morning Times reports today that two bodies were hung from a bridge in Nuevo Laredo along with a threat against people who post on narco blogs, websites that share information about drug traffickers that local news media have stopped reporting.
From the Times:

In the messages left on the bodies, a criminal group complains about the use of social forums, such as “Al rojo vivo,” “Blog del Narco” and

“Denuncias A.C.,” which they said alert authorities to criminal activities.

“This is going to happen to all who gossip on the Internet,” a message states in Spanish.

“I know who you are.” It was signed with a “Z.”

The so-called narco blogs have become popular in Mexico as criminal organizations, notably the Zetas whose base is in Nuevo Laredo, intimidate journalists. The term “self censorship” is often used to describe news outlets’ tactics in cities where an enlace, a go-between for the cartel and the local media who is often a corrupt reporter, relays specific instructions as to how stories about narco violence are to be handled. As a result, many publications drop drug war coverage altogether rather than take sides and risk becoming targets.

Sites like Blog del Narco regularly post announcements from the Mexican government about the killing and arrest of cartel operatives, information the Zetas in particular find embarrassing and try to suppress.

I'm wondering why the drug cartels even care that people denounce their criminal activity. After all, it's not like it's a secret. I have a solution for the drug cartels, it's called napalm.
