Border Patrol seizes more than $3.4 million of marijuana in five days

CREATED Nov. 20, 2013TUCSON (KGUN9-TV)- Tucson Sector Border Patrol seized more than 6,937 pounds of marijuana, worth more than $3.4 million in five days.

Agents recovered 1,029 pounds of drugs Friday in Paradise Valley, Ariz. This was reportedly discovered near an SUV. They didn't find anyone in the vicinity.

Officers also arrested a U.S. citizen at the Highway 80 checkpoint on Saturday. This person was trying to smuggle 17.5 pounds or marijuana in the rear cab of a truck.

Tucson Sector Border Patrol also located more than 37 bundles of marijuana, weighing more than 1,800 pounds on the Tohono O'Odham Nation Saturday evening. They searched the area, but did not find any suspects.

In addition, agents uncovered more than 16 bundles of the drug near Cockelburr, Ariz. Sunday. This is northeast of Oracle, Ariz.

On Monday, they found more than 1,020 pounds of marijuana near mile marker 150 on Interstate 8. Officers located these narcotics strapped to three abandoned ATVs. No one was arrested in this case.

Lastly, Tucson Sector agents confiscated more than 2,300 pounds of marijuana from a pickup truck near Sonoita, Ariz. on Tuesday. An agent initially tried to stop this vehicle, but the driver accelerated, lost control and drove through a fence.

The suspect then ran away. Officials searched the truck and found 100 bundles of marijuana inside, valued at nearly $1.2 million. They did not locate the driver in this case.

The person apprehended at the Highway 80 checkpoint will be presented for prosecution. Tucson Sector Border Patrol processed all drugs and cars for seizure.
