Gunmen kill 3 illegal immigrants in Ariz

TUCSON, Ariz. - Gunmen stopped a pickup truck full of illegal immigrants, shot some and took the rest captive Thursday in an attack that left at least three men dead and two people wounded, authorities said.

Authorities were trying to determine who the gunmen were and said some of the immigrants remained missing.

The men shot three people, one fatally, along a known smuggling corridor near Tucson, then forced several other immigrants in the group to leave with them, Pima County sheriff's officials said.

The bodies of two of those immigrants were found about 10 miles north in the cab of the pickup truck that had been carrying the group.

Two men who were not injured were in custody and telling deputes what happened, and the other immigrants had not been found by midday Thursday.

The crime was similar to a robbery Wednesday night more than 70 miles south, near the Mexican border, said Rick Kastigar, the Pima County sheriff's criminal investigations chief. In that incident, four men carrying assault weapons and wearing ski masks robbed 18 immigrants, but no one was reported injured.

Investigators did not immediately know a motive for Thursday's attack, but gangs of bandits are known to roam border areas preying on illegal immigrants as they cross into the country. Feuding among smuggling organizations also is not uncommon, sometimes involving demands for ransoms from the immigrants relatives to gain their freedom.

Thursday morning's attack occurred on a dirt road near the Silverbell Mine, about 20 miles northwest of Tucson, said Rick Kastigar, the Pima County sheriff's criminal investigations chief.

The immigrants were heading north when four men armed with assault rifles in another vehicle forced the truck to stop, Kastigar said. During the confrontation, one man was killed, another was shot in the hand — losing several fingers — and a woman was shot in the chest and suffered a neck injury.

The two wounded immigrants were taken to a hospital with "very, very serious injuries," said sheriff's Sgt. James Ogden.

Gunmen kill 3 migrants outside Tucson

    Feb. 8, 2007

TUCSON - Gunmen confronted nine or 10 undocumented immigrants in a vehicle along a known smuggling corridor northwest of Tucson, killing three men Thursday and injuring at least two other people, authorities said.

One man was found dead on a dirt road frequented by human smugglers near the Silverbell mine more than 20 miles northwest of Tucson.

Authorities later found two more men dead a few miles north in the cab of the pickup truck that had been carrying the migrants, said Rick Kastigar, the Pima County sheriff's criminal investigations chief.

Those two men were among six or seven people in the group who were taken against their will, officials said.

Kastigar said the migrants were in a white pickup truck heading north when four men armed with assault rifles in a second vehicle forced it to stop.

During a confrontation, one man was shot and killed. Two people were shot and wounded: a woman who sustained a neck wound and a man who suffered a hand injury that took off several fingers, Kastigar said.

Sheriff's Sgt. James Ogden said the two wounded migrants had "very, very serious injuries." Both were taken to an area hospital.

Two more men who were not injured were taken into custody as witnesses and were questioned by investigators, Ogden said.

Kastigar said the confrontation near Tucson occurred about 12 hours after an incident more than 70 miles south, near the border at Sasabe, in which 18 illegal immigrants were robbed at gunpoint by four heavily armed men wearing ski masks.

It wasn't clear whether the events were related, though gangs of bandits are known to roam the border areas preying on illegal immigrants as they cross into the country.

Migrant killings 'increasing at alarming rate'
    DAVID L. TEIBEL
    Tucson Citizen
The gruesome scene that left one - possibly three - migrants killed by gunmen in the far Northwest side today is becoming increasingly common along the smuggling routes, a top sheriff's official said.
Such incidents are "increasing at an alarming rate," said Bureau Chief Richard Kastigar, head of investigations at the Sheriff's Department. "This is almost becoming a daily occurrence."
According to law enforcement officials, these type of gunmen, or bandits:
    > Are Mexican or Americans who first identify, then target, an immigrant group.
    > Then they set up ambushes in the desert, stealing whatever cash and valuables they can.
    > Then, bandits often kidnap the illegal immigrants by taking them to a safehouse and holding them for ransom from family members in Mexico or in the U.S.
    > These incidents are often unreported to law enforcement.
In today's incident, four men in a vehicle forced a truck with nine or 10 illegal immigrants to stop along the 26900 block of West Silverbell Road, near the Silverbell mine some 20 miles northwest of Tucson,
The bandits were wearing dark clothing, spoke Spanish and were armed with AK-47-type assault rifles, Kastigar said.
Kastigar did not know what prompted the barrage of gunfire by the bandits. He speculated the incident started out as a robbery and possibly a kidnapping.
When the shooting was over, Kastigar said one man was dead, a woman was shot in the chest and also had an injury to her neck, and one man was shot in the hand and several fingers were severed. The wounded were taken to a hospital.
Two survivors were found at the scene and have been questioned by detectives.
The remaining survivors were kidnapped by the gunmen, possibly for ransom, Kastigar said.
The shootings may also be tied to the shooting deaths of two other men found dead later in the cab of a pickup 10 to 12 miles from the shooting scene.
Today's incident is similar to one Wednesday night when four men wearing dark clothing, dark ski masks and carrying AK-47-type assault rifles held up a group of 18 illegal immigrants in the desert near Sasabe, Kastigar said. No one was hurt or kidnapped in that holdup.
It also is similar to one near Eloy on Jan. 27.
Detectives are looking at that case to see if those assailants could be the same men.
In the Eloy case, authorities searching for four men who attacked 12 undocumented immigrants - fatally shooting an Arizona man and wounding a Mexican man - in what may have been a dispute between human smugglers, the Associated Press reported.
Illegal aliens remain exempt from American laws, while they DEMAND American rights...
