Senate Extends Scholarship Program To Illegal Immigrants
POSTED: 8:35 am MST March 2, 2005
SANTA FE, N.M. -- The New Mexico Senate has approved a proposal to allow certain non-citizen residents who graduate from a New Mexico high school to receive lottery scholarships.
The bill would extend eligibility for in-state tuition and the state-funded financial aid program to illegal immigrants who attended a New Mexico high school for at least a year and graduated or received a high school equivalency degree.
Supporters said the legislation would help children of undocumented immigrants living in New Mexico -- some having worked and paid taxes in the state for many years.
But Sen. Mark Boitano, an Albuquerque Republican, said New Mexico could see a flood of immigrants coming into the state to receive the scholarships.
This is totally outrageous! I paid out-of-state tuition and never got a scholarship or asked for a grant. I also pay taxes, but I guess that doesn't matter since I am a legal citizen.
