DREAM Act vote moved to next week

DREAM Act vote moved to next week

From NBC's Chuck Todd and Domenico Montanaro
The Senate will not vote on the DREAM act today. Instead, they'll vote next week on the version the House passed last night, according a Senate leadership aide.
That doesn't mean the bill is dead. It actually means this won't just be a symbolic vote. Democrats don't have the votes yet, but they think they might -- might -- have a chance to corral enough votes for passage.

Democrats need 60 votes to overcome a filibuster

    Wrong
In this vote they only need 50 I believe , A simple majority
That is why they didn't allow this to go to a vote
There would be no recourse , it would go to the pres to be signed , no cloture , no debate , no amends

Any bill that comes to the floor for a vote on passage can be filibustered thus requiring 60 votes. I assume Reid, when he brings it to the floor, will ask for a unanimous consent resolution (unless he files cloture on it directly) and when unanimous consent fails on an objection then a 60 vote majority is required. Either way he will need 60 votes.

Well, we have time, then, to expose this as just another amnesty in disguise. Despite their high falutin' sob stories about outstanding people, the reality is that 98 percent of the people would not be in this category. It's just an amnesty in sheep's clothes and would foster another liberal lobbying group.

Yes, that was my take on it too, that they will still need a cloture vote on the House Bill next week, which hopefully we can defeat.

Here is Numbersusa's take on it too:

House Passes DREAM Act Amnesty, Senate Cancels Cloture Vote for Today

"Updated Thursday, December 9, 2010, 11:55 AM EST - posted on NumbersUSA

    "S.729/H.R.1751

"Today, Sen. Reid succeeded in canceling a cloture vote on S. 3992 (Senate DREAM Act). The Senate voted 59 to 40 to table a motion to proceed with cloture. Reid is likely to file a cloture motion on the House DREAM Act amnesty (H.R. 5281), which passed last night by a 216-198 margin. Senate Republicans refused to voluntarily cancel today's vote in order to force Democrats into two votes, the first of which they were certain to lose because of unified Republican opposition prior to passage of tax cut/government funding legislation. Please continue to call the Senate at 202-224-3121 and urge a NO on the DREAM Act."

To every member of the Senate. You have a chance to either stand up for American Kids or knife them in the back and sell them out to illegal aliens. Every seat these illegal aliens take is a seat that is needed and belongs to an American Kid. Every education and job opportunity you hand off to an illegal alien is destroying the hopes, dreams, lives and livelihoods of an American Kid and an American Family. If you think we aren't taking notice, then be advised we are, and we will never forget the lowest of the lowest traitors in our country who chose to sell out their own kids for the expectation of another race-based vote.

Well you can bet that Huckleberry Harry and Jim will be workin' both sides of the aisle to cut some deals to get the opposition under control. Wanna bet?

If they get the taxes issue resolved, then it's a new game for them because that was one of the stated holdups for a number of Republicans. It will all get down to a lot of behind the scenes bargaining, I think. So we will have to be persistent. Passage though, would be big trouble for Republicans because then they would have a new and energized lobbying group to fight off for other Dem initiatives.
