Police say there are a lot of crimes in Austin that go unreported because of cultural fears.

"The fact of the matter is that 20 percent of our population are non-English speakers," Austin police officer Lawrence Davis said.

Some of them come from countries where there is scarce trust in those who enforce the law.

That's why the Mexican Consulate and the Austin Police Department held a safety fair in North Austin Friday. The gathering gave minorities the chance to voice their concerns.

"The Mexican Consulate wants to help the Mexican community to solve a lot of problems," the Consulate's Raul Morales said.

One of the biggest fears is that victims of crimes will become victims again by the very people who are supposed to protect them.

"They're afraid that if they do report the crime that they're going to get deported," neighbor Hector Puente said.

But police say there is no danger of that.

"When you call 911, I'm there for no other reason than why you
called me there. Unless there's another criminal offense going on, I'm not interested," Davis said.

The Austin Police Department has also tried to bridge the gap by training its officers to speak Spanish.

I wonder how many more crimes illegals are committing that aren't being reported. It couldn't be many since they are here only to pick vegetables.

Austin is a Sanctuary City. Can you tell by this article?

How's Austins crime rate loocking? All those illegals snitching on other illegals should be reflected in the crime stats and immigration holds.

    redbadger,

I agree with you about the decay and desecration.

I went to Austin in the early 80's and I went this year and in comparison, it's going down.

Rick Perry is a piece of... of... of... work.

That's not really what I wanted to say.
