Enforcing state immigration laws at the local level, it’s something Clemson’s City Council plans to take a look at Monday night. Lawmakers and Governor Sanford passed the bill earlier this year. Under the law, all businesses must verify new hires are in the U.S. legally or face civil fines of up to $1,000 dollars per worker.
Public contractors with at least 500 employees must begin verifying their new hires by January. All other businesses must follow by July 2010.
Our coverage partners at the ‘Independent Mail’ report Clemson Council Member Margaret Thompson plans to introduce an ordinance Monday night that requires business owners to sign an affidavit that they will comply with state immigration laws when they renew their business licenses.
