A Mexican citizen led federal agents on a chase Thursday after fleeing the San Clemente Border Patrol checkpoint, ultimately crashing into power pole cables and trying to escape on foot.

It didn’t work, though and agents caught up to the man, unidentified by authorities, hiding in some thick foliage.

The chase began around 9:30 p.m. Thursday, according to a U.S. Border Patrol press release issued today. The 30-year-old Mexican national ignored a request to stop at the checkpoint and fled northbound

He exited the freeway at Basilone Road in his 1999 Ford Mustang, “nearly colliding with a commercial vehicle,” says the press release. “The man lost control of his vehicle, breaking through a fence, landing in a ditch, and then crashing into power pole cables.”

Additional agents were called in, and they found the man hiding in some bushes, according to the U.S. Border Patrol.

“The suspect admitted he had prior arrests and had re-entered the U.S. illegally,” the press release states.
