COLTS NECK — Police arrested a 29-year-old Long Branch man who they said accessed a township couple's checking account and moved more than $1,100 from their account to his own.

Pablo Vasquez, also known as Martin Landa, of Lippincott Avenue, Long Branch, used a bank's telephone system to access the couple's account, Detective Sgt. Joseph Whitehead said.

Vasquez used the telephone banking system to move money into his own account several times on July 2, and he was able to obtain more than $1,100, the sergeant said.

When the couple realized money was missing from the checking account, they called police.

Police arrested Vasquez Friday and charged him with theft and falsifying or tampering with records.

Police are still trying to determine how Vasquez was able to obtain the couple's personal information. Police did not release the name of the bank involved in the case.

Vasquez, an illegal immigrant from Mexico, was sent to the Monmouth County Jail in Freehold Township, with bail set at $15,000, police said.

No kidding! I'd like to know how he did it tho. That concerns me since most of us deal with banks. This is a new way to rip us off. I hope it isn't one of many cases of this.

Well seeing that he's using a false identity with a matricula consular id why not? He's got nothing to lose.

This is unsettling. Those secret words used as passwords are usually very personal. Correctly guessing at something like 'the name of your first pet' would be very unlikely. I hope they will elaborate on this.

I think a bank account number + last 4 of ssn would have been enough.

I know my bank just needs my account # and the last four digits of SS number. They also want me to verify my address. If it was on-line, then they would need the password.
Bless my friends and family, and God Bless America!
