Immigration law weighs in Ariz. race endorsement

Gov. Jan Brewer's signing of Arizona's controversial law on illegal immigration figured in a decision by a statewide group of police unions and other law enforcement associations to endorse her candidacy for governor.

Arizona Police Association officials say the law will help attack crime, putting them at odds with police chiefs who call it burdensome and dangerous.

The association also cited Brewer's record on budget issues and other topics in their endorsement Thursday of Brewer for both the contested Republican primary and the general election.

Brewer told the association officials that they understand that the law can be implemented fairly and, in her words, "how immigration is hurting us." She later said she meant to say "illegal immigration."
