The Arizona Department of Economic Security says a new immigration enforcement law applies to a broad range of social-welfare programs.

DES late Thursday released documents that will be used to implement the law that took effect Nov. 24.

Covered programs include food nutrition aid, the Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System, unemployment insurance and child care subsidies, as well as numerous smaller programs.

The new law goes beyond a 2004 voter-approved measure that Attorney General Terry Goddard said applied only to several small welfare programs.

Both the new law and the old one require provide proof of legal immigration status when applying for public benefits. Also, both require public employees to report illegal immigrants who try to obtain benefits.
