NAPLES — It’s like an immigration critic’s fantasy.

Jobs previously held by foreign-born workers are being snatched up by natives. Immigrant workers are leaving the state or returning to their home countries. And, for the first time since roughly 2004, the unemployment rate nationally among immigrant workers may be higher than for native workers.

Those conclusions are based on an analysis of U.S. Census Bureau data from the first quarter of this year published by a Washington, D.C.-based think tank and observations made by Southwest Florida officials close to the immigrant work force.

Some of the local officials were surprised to hear the unemployment rate may have been lower among immigrants during the recent past, a conclusion of the think tank’s report.

Others, though, are guessing at why it has increased. Aside from blaming the unemployment on the decline in construction industry jobs, they said native workers now are more willing to accept low-paying jobs that immigrants were more likely to take prior to the recession.

Maybe that's the case in Naples and the west coast but I haven't seen much of a difference in South East Florida. They are still around and you see them in the stores all the time. Many have over stayed visas are getting caught driving and others are killing each other. There have been several murders this year involving what I call iilegal on illegal crime. Many time the media will hint about it and say how they sent money back home and worked jobs that we know are done by illegals. There was a case not far from my daughter's place where they had a hard time identifying the muder victim as he was using fake ID. Now we have one where a man from Guatamala was murdered and was dismembered. His remains have been washing up in several areas in Miami Dade County. This guy is 100% illegal as his brother who is also illegal went looking for him at hospitals and called friends but did not report him missing to police. I heard the BOLO (be on the look out) this morning for the person of interest in this case.

I doubt few are going back to the old country. They are going to stay here until they either get amnesty or the economy turns around.
