Shootouts, grenade explosion reported in Matamoros
Two shootouts and a grenade explosion are being reported south of the border in Matamoros.

Residents used the social media network Twitter to reported the shootouts starting around 8 p.m. Thursday.

Details were not immediately available and authorities could not immediately be reached for comment but residents reported some details.

Residents in the Colonia Puerto Rico neighborhood on the city's southwest side reported the detonation of a grenade around 11:30 p.m. Thursday.

It's not clear if anyone was injured in the incident.

The first shootout was reported near the Nuevo Amanecer neighborhood off the Sendero Nacional highway around 8 p.m. Thursday.

A user on Twitter reported that the Mexican military had set up a checkpoint on Kilometer 3.1 of the highway.

Another one was reported off Avenida Lauro Villar just south of the Veterans International Bridge.

The shootout took place near a shopping center with a Soriana supermarket and a movie theater.

"Hell is what one lives in Matamoros," one Twitter user wrote in Spanish. "Just going to the movies is like we're part of the film."

Residents reported the presence of the Mexican military in the Los Arboledas neighborhood just to east of the Veterans bridge.

The incidents come just one day after unknown suspects threw grenades at the Matamoros City Hall injuring two people.
