Nebraska Sen. Ben Nelson and his wife were leaving dinner at a new pizza joint near their home in Omaha one night last week when a patron began complaining about Nelson’s decisive vote in favor of the Senate’s health care bill.

Other customers started booing. A woman yelled, “Get him the hell out of here!â€

They ought to boo that traitor right out of the state.

It figures.

Senator Nelson's Pizza-Gate


Omaha, NE - Senator Ben Nelson's vote for health care reform has drawn a firestorm of reaction, including now, constituents confronting the Senator.

On the "Rush Limbaugh Show" and in "USA Today", it's the outburst being heard around the nation and it's already got a name. "Pizza-gate."

"It was very very very quick. It lasted about five seconds," says Nick Strawhecker owner of Dante Pizzeria Nepoletana.

At one of west Omaha's latest restaurants, a women opposing healthcare reform let's Senator Nelson hear it, standing up from the bar and yelling quote, "get him the hell out of here." Strawhecker watches the hostility.

"The woman that had her little statement was definitely drinking vino."

Witnesses claim other customers also voice opposition with Nelson, just more politely.

"He was cool and took off," says Strawhecker.

In less than a week, the outburst makes national news on Politico's web site and Pizza-gate is born. You'd expect to find someone mixing up a cocktail at Dante, but mixing politics with pizza, it's not exactly what Nick thought his restaurant would be known for.

"We'll take what we can get. We didn't expect it at all."

Sitting with Senator Nelson the night of outburst, Nick's cousin, James Martin Davis.

"Talk about science fiction. A lady who had too much to drink says one thing as we were walking out and it turns into this colossal Pizza-gate."

Blown out of proportion or not, the healthcare issue continues to draw strong opinions from both sides. Opinion's Nick and his restaurant, won't partake in.

"No I am not."

We asked for an interview with Senator Nelson. His media advisor says he didn't want to talk about it.

They sure should! He's up for re-election in 2012 and when he last ran in 2006 his popularity was 73% but now it's 40% due largely to his vote on health care reform. Count him ... gone.
