Six illegal immigrants detained in Hanover

HANOVER, N.H. (AP) -- Federal officials have taken custody of six illegal immigrants who were detained as they were preparing to work on a construction job at Dartmouth College.

Hanover police said the six are from Honduras. They ranged in age from 14 to 30 and were working for a company in Holyoke, Mass., to hang drywall at Dartmouth. Police detained the group after Dartmouth College security officials alerted police about a fracas at the college's parking lot.

Police said the six were engaged in horseplay and had either fake or forged documents.

Police Chief Nicholas Giaccone said Monday that police did not charge them with any crimes. Police called the Border Patrol, who took the six into custody.

Police in New Ipswich and Hudson have cited illegal immigrants on trespassing charges, a practice now before a district court judge in Jaffrey.

"I don't want to get into the middle of that," Giaccone said. The police department has had "fairly good responses" from the border patrol in the past, he said.
