The Mexican central bank reports that money sent home by Mexicans in America hit nearly $25 billion last year, overtaking oil revenues for the first time as a source of foreign income.
In his proposal, Trump threatens to change a rule under the USA Patriot Act, an anti-terrorism law, to cut off remittances sent to Mexico. But he says he would withdraw the threat if Mexico makes a one-time payment of $5-10 billion to finance the 1,000-mile wall.

So he says a better option would be to stop paying out more than $4 billion a year in tax returns or earned income tax credits to illegal aliens.
"Donald Trump, or any other president, could raise the $10 billion to pay for the wall to Mexico simply by stopping our government from giving away $10 billion every two years or so to the illegal immigrants in the United States of America," Gheen adds.
Trump has estimated his proposed wall --- a top promise of his presidential campaign --- would cost between $10 and $12 billion, and has argued that it would protect the country from illegal border crossings and halt drug shipments.
