KS: Protect city's jobs, use E-Verify
The Capital-Journal
Published Thursday, August 07, 2008
After reading about the E-Verify program that is available from the federal government to verify documents presented to employers, I believe this is a worthy program for our country and should be considered for implementation at every level of employment to protect U.S. jobs for legitimate U.S. workers. That's the purpose of the E-Verify program.
It can be implemented on a municipal level, and I believe it would be a good thing.
The proposal I am bringing before the city council is for Topeka, as an employer, to implement and comply with the federal e-Verify program (there is no cost to any employer to use this program) in its employment process. Included with this proposal is a requirement that companies who contract with the city of Topeka also be registered and comply with the E-Verify program in their respective businesses.
I have had small-business owners in our community indicate their reluctance over the contractor provision, but I also have heard positive comments — businesses seeking contracts with the city won't be competing against companies that may employ ineligible U.S. workers. That makes for a more even playing field.
On Tuesday, this proposal will be acted on by the Topeka City Council at the 6 p.m. meeting. Before the meeting will be a work session featuring Kris Kobach, a professor of Immigration Law and Constitution Law at the University of Missouri-Kansas City and an advocate for U.S. worker rights. Kobach will address the council and answer any questions from council members about the E-Verify program.
The work session is open to the public and will begin at 5:15 p.m. The city council meeting will begin at 6.

Wow...this is GREAT news....especially since this is coming from the state of Kansas home state of LA Raza's Janet Murgiua and her clan of pro-illegal immigration advocates! I think more and more counties and municipalities will start implementing not only 287(g) but E-Verify and THAT's a GOOD THING.

I have seen what you are talking about out there in Kansas
I have been out to Wichita several times over these past months and I could not believe my eyes when I had seen all the ILLEGALS Now living in the city of Wichita. Up there by 21st street and all the way down into the city. I only know this from the fact that I lived there for 24 years .
I grow so tired of people saying they pick our fruits !!!! SOMEONE better OPEN their eyes because they are literally taking over in many fields of work and YES I know it is the EMPLOYERS who hire them that should be hald at fault.
Here in an area of North Carolina that is all I see at building sites anymore. They have literally taken over and have cost the honest CONTRACTORS many thousands of dollars in lost wages and or income.
And did you know the farmers here have to pay these migrant workers 9.00 hr plus room and board. That is a lot more then the American MINIMUM WAGES
HIRE AMERICANS FOR AMERICAN JOBS AND BRING BACK OUR JOBS FROM OVERSEAS!..AND MEXICO!!!!!"When you have knowledge, you have a responsibility to do better"_ Paula Johnson

The single most effective weapon against illegal immigration is not what you’d first think of. It’s a piece of software called E-verify, an internet-based system operated jointly by the Department of Homeland Security and Social Security Administration. It allows businesses to check the legal status of its employees -- accurately, cheaply, and timely. It only takes seconds to get the answer! E-verify has literally given the American people the upper hand in the battle against illegal immigration. They have been able to prevail even when the money, power and the press has been against them. E-verify came into existence in 1997 as a limited pilot program and has been expanded, improved, and renewed over the years. But unless Congress acts to renew it soon, or preferably make it permanent, E-Verify shuts down in November and the single most effective tool against illegal immigration will disappear.
69,000 businesses are using E-Verify and that 99.5 percent of all people authorized to work are verified immediately. E-Verify has identified 200,000 individuals (nationwide) who were trying to gain work in the United States who were not eligible, legally, to work. That's 5 percent of the workers screened. The system has handled 4 million queries this year, including nearly a half-million from Arizona.Join our efforts to Secure America's Borders and End Illegal Immigration by Joining ALIPAC's E-Mail Alerts network (CLICK HERE)
